Big Little Moments

8 december 2018 - Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mexico

I doubted to call this post 'Big Little Moments' or 'Little Big Moments'. But when overthinking it I came to the conclusion that a "little big Moment" is a big moment that despite of its bigness is rather insignificant. So a little bit like every tweet from Donald Trump, you would expect it to be a big moment if the president of the United States of America took the time to send a message into the world... But then you end up rather disappointed. I want to talk about the opposite feeling, thus very small moments that are really significant to me on a personal level. Hence the title was born.

Yes sometimes it is not at all easy for me here. Children asking a lot of attention can make your mind want to explode. The days are long and exhausting on a physical and mental level. I do miss my friends and family. I miss cooking some excellent food and the glorious feeling of eating your own creation.

But.

Despite of all that I feel enormously light and eager to go on. And I feel that way because everyday I look for the big little moments, and when I find them I feel like encountering the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. These moments give me so much energy. And the reason I want to write about this is that I really want to remember to keep doing this for the rest of my life: looking for big little moments. Wherever I am and whatever I am doing, I never want to let a big little moment pass by treating it as a "fait divers". Big Little Moments make the heart sing and dance and they make life a true gift that is worth experiencing despite of all the hardship you go through. I experienced that it does need some practice though, letting the heart sing and dance. If you frequently choose to discard the big little moments, you end up with a paralyzed numb heart that is unable to dance and sing, but the more you practice it and the more you look for the big little moments, the easier it gets. And before you know it, your heart is singing Mozart's Queen of the night while doing a sevenfold pirouette.

To those who need some practice in singing and dancing, or to those who want to enjoy the show of my heart, I want to share with you some of my big little moments from the past weeks/months.

* On our patio I saw a beautiful little hummingbird, can you believe that, a hummingbird here in the city. I only Saw a hummingbird once before in my life and I needed to go to the Forrest in Costa Rica for it. But here in the city this cute little beautiful bird was just minding his own business eating the nectar from some flower. I didn't expect to see anything out of the ordinary that moment so unfortunately I didn't have my camera on me to take a picture, but I do have the picture clear in my mind. So whenever I have a difficult moment I can always close my eyes and observe this beautiful creature.

* Before going to sleep I always take a few minutes to lay down on our roof and gaze upon the starry sky. Sometimes I use my binoculars to look at the beautiful landscape of the moon. Also, at night, when everything is getting quiet over here and I lay there, serene, I can spot some bats looking for a snack.

* Every time I feel successful in teaching a kid something new, however small and insignificant that something is, it is a very big little moment.

* At some random moment, without any particular reason, this happened; Seven year old Francisco running to me with the biggest smile on his face, arms wide spread, crushing into my arms, giving me a big hug and whispering in my ear 'Te quiero mucho'.

* We were all in a circle and sister Teresa asked to think about something you liked about your two neighbours, after contemplating this she asked us to tell our neighbour what we came up with. The kid on my right told me I am the best volunteer ever and the one on my left side told me he is much happier since I am here. Extremely big little moment for me.

* On the 5th of December it was the international day of the volunteer. Some kids came to congratulate and thank me personally, the sisters celebrated the mass in my honor. Although I am not religious I really appreciated that because I know it is their way to show me respect.

* Reading and finishing 'The Taoh of Pooh' by B. Hoff. This is one of the best books I ever read. I already finished its succesor 'The Te of Piglet'. Thank you Driehoek for recommending it, I enjoyed it thoroughly.

There are certainly more of these moments, this is just an anthology.

I wish that you might all have it in you to recognize the big little moments in your existence and that you might experience them very consciously.

Best greetings,

B. Supertramp
